Helping your Child Communicate with Confidence Through Child-Led, Connection-Focused Support

Services

I believe that building a sense of trust, safety, and acceptance is the key to long-term success as your child develops skills that will help them communicate with confidence. My sessions are child-led and play-based, centred around what engages and motivates your child, and what helps them feel their best as they are learning. Together with you and your child, we will develop a therapy plan tailored to your child’s individual needs, whilst ensuring that you feel confident supporting your child outside of sessions.

I primarily provide support for school-aged children, focusing on the following:

  • Social Communication - e.g. navigating social situations and friendships; working out non-verbal communication (body language, tone of voice); interpreting humour; understanding and communicating one’s own social preferences and needs

  • Language Therapy - e.g. understanding instructions in the classroom; choosing words to use to express ideas clearly; telling stories; using words in the correct order in sentences

  • Literacy Skills - e.g. identifying individual sounds in words; decoding words; understanding texts; spelling words; understanding grammar; constructing sentences and written assignments

  • Executive Functioning - e.g. setting up the environment to start on homework (what materials do I need? where do I start? how much time will it take?); modifying a plan if it didn’t work the first time; staying on task and redirecting if focus is interrupted

To support your child’s progress, I also set aside approximately 20% extra time outside of sessions, at no extra cost. This behind-the-scenes time often includes keeping in touch with you and your child’s team, planning engaging activities, creating personalized materials, and using the latest research to guide therapy.

Catherine, speech-language pathologist in Vernon, BC..

Hi, I’m Catherine!

As a registered Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), I’ve been working with children and adolescents for over 12 years. Before moving to Canada from the UK, I worked as a school SLP for the National Autistic Society, and as a specialist literacy teacher and SLP at Fairley House School for children with learning disabilities and differences. I’m fortunate to have gained vast experience working with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, developmental language disorder (DLD), and associated learning differences.

Since moving to Canada in 2019, I have been working in private practice, passionately supporting neurodivergent (ND) children and their families. As an ADHDer myself, I love helping my clients to understand, develop skills, and self-advocate for their individual learning styles and communication preferences. Whether we’re working on reading, social communication, or vocabulary skills, my ultimate goal is to ensure that your child can communicate their thoughts, needs, wants, and desires with confidence.
